Do I still need to get a Texas license to carry? Technically, the answer is no, but a better queston to ask yourself is, SHOULD I still get a Texas license to carry? The answer to that question is a resounding yes. While Texas has passed permitless carry and it will be a great thing for lot of people, it comes with limitations and restrictions that do not apply if you have with a Texas license to carry.
Texas permitless carry (not really consitutional carry because of the restrictions) does not allow you to carry in as many places as those who have a license to carry can. Additionally, with Texas permitless carry you must also obey ALL “no gun” type signs posted on businesses. License to carry holders may ignore all of these signs (except the 30.06/30.07 sign as designated by law). Texas license to carry comes with additonal benefits as well.
Trespass Protection
A person carrying with a Texas license to carry has trespass protections under Texas state law. If a Texas license to carry holder carries into a place that has a legal prohibited carry sign posted they cannot be charged without being given the option to leave the buidling first. Conversely, a person carrying under Texas permitless carry can immediately be charged because they do NOT have to be given the opton to leave the building first. This one reason alone is well worth the getting your Texas license to carry.
Reciprocity With Other States
Texas license to carry has reciprocity in a total of 37 states making traveling extremely easy. You lose this benefit in the majority of those states (22 of them) if you do not have a Texas license to carry. Texas permitless carry will limit you to only other permitless carry states that allow non-residents the ability to carry without some type of reciprocal license.
Gun Purchases
A Texas license to carry allows you to bypass a background check when purchasing from gun dealers/stores. This benefit alone is yet another reason to get your Texas license to carry, this makes the purchase faster, easier, and smoother.
Restricted Carry Locations/Off Limit Places
Texas permitless carry laws have a list of restricted or off limits places that are defined by Texas state law that people without a license to carry are not allowed to carry in. A Texas license to carry allows you to carry in more places with less restrictions so why would you even consider wanting to deal with these restrictions?
